Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA) Is Saluted!

80-20PAC is gratified and appreciative to learn that 73 Jewish Advocacy Organizations Nationwide are voicing support to the Chinese American and the Chinese Communities “in light of the rising xenophobia aimed at Chinese people in this country and abroad over the COVID-19 “coronavirus”. This is a great example of minorities supporting each other to build an America that shows to the world that we are “inclusive” and that we are indeed a “Shining City on a Hill”.

The following excerpts are from the JCPA web page.

“The Jewish community has strong and abiding ties to the Chinese community in the U.S. and abroad,” stated Michael Fromm, Chair of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA). “When our friends are targeted, we act and let them know they can count on us.”

“We want to thank our partners in the Jewish community for their solidarity and friendship,” stated Fred Teng, President of America China Public Affairs Institute (ACPAI). “We stand together for truth and fairness, and against the spread of false and damaging information.”

David Bernstein, JCPA’s President and CEO, added that “We were so proud of the broad and diverse response from national organizations and local Jewish community relations councils, many of which are in active contact with their local Chinese counterparts.”

“It is truly appreciated when other groups stand with you especially when we face challenging times,” stated Sharon Wong, President of the OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates. “Many in the community have been devastated, not just by the virus itself but the xenophobia, harassment, bullying, and fear that has been directed to our community.”

JCPA, national organizations and JCRCs sent  the letter with all the signatories in both English and Chinese to scores of Chinese American leaders and organizations.

Letter of solidarity from the Jewish communities

Dear Friends,

We are writing to express our heartfelt solidarity with you during these tense and troubling times.

We are concerned about rising xenophobia aimed at Chinese people in this country and abroad over the COVID-19 “coronavirus”. We know that in such times, concern can quickly turn into hysteria, which can lead to scapegoating. We pledge to help ensure that Chinese people feel safe and supported, and to combat attacks and stereotyping on social media. We know from history, ours and yours, that such fearmongering can be devastating.

We are also aware that many Chinese-owned businesses have been affected by misinformed concerns about the COVID-19 virus. Please be assured that we will strongly encourage our own community not to give in to such fears. According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases, the danger for Americans is “just miniscule” and there is no need to avoid Chinese people or businesses. Indeed, several Jewish communities have sent delegations to local Chinatowns to show their unwavering support.

The Chinese and Jewish communities share much in common, including a commitment to the highest ideals and welcoming spirit of America. We in the Jewish community are more committed than ever to upholding these ideals and ensuring they are extended to you, our friends and neighbors.

Lastly, we know many of you are concerned about the health of relatives and friends in China. We offer our thoughts and prayers.

Please do not hesitate to call upon us at any time.

Very sincerely,

Michael Fromm
JCPA Chair
